Earnings Outlook: Cybersecurity earnings: With midterms ahead, demand — and stock prices — are high

Cybersecurity companies appear to be benefiting from fat IT spending budgets fueled by tax cuts and fears of hackers, but a healthy run on stock prices in the sector sets a high bar this earnings season.

The ETFMG Prime Cyber Security ETF HACK, -1.53% weighted heavily with stocks like Cisco Systems Inc. CSCO, +0.78% Palo Alto Networks Inc. PANW, -1.36% and Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. CHKP, +1.00% , is up 22% on the year, compared with a 5.5% gain for the S&P 500 index SPX, +0.48% and a nearly 14% gain for the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -0.01% .
