In One Chart: The West is the best: These are the fastest growing states

The economy may have hit a soft patch in the first three months of 2018, but Washington and a handful of other far Western states skidded around the obstacles to growth.

Washington posted the best performance among the 50 U.S. states in the first quarter, the federal Bureau of Economic Analysis said. Gross domestic product, the official yardstick for the economy, expanded at a 3.6% annual pace.

By contrast, the U.S. economy as a whole grew just 2% in the first quarter.

Washington was one of only four states to reach the 3% mark.
