The Wall Street Journal: U.S. troops deployed to border could exceed 5,200, general says

WASHINGTON — The number of U.S. troops being deployed to the Mexican border could eventually grow beyond 5,239 — the figure that officials announced a day earlier — according to the military commander overseeing the deployment.

Air Force Gen. Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy, said, “5,239 is not the top line.” He is commander of U.S. Northern Command, which is responsible for the territorial U.S., and met briefly with reporters at the Pentagon on Tuesday.

O’Shaughnessy didn’t specify a final maximum troop figure, but a defense official said that another 3,000 troops are on “ready reserve” and could be sent later.
