Record job openings and strong hiring have reduced the unemployment rate to a 48-year low and made it easy for most Americans to find work.

The numbers: The weekly number of Americans losing their jobs fell slightly in late October and clung near the lowest level in decades.

Initial jobless claims, a rough way to measure layoffs, fell by 2,000 to 214,000 in the seven days ended Oct. 27, the government said Thursday. That was a bit higher than the 212,000 forecast of economists polled by MarketWatch.

The more stable monthly average of new claims rose by 1,750 to 213,750.
