Yum Brands’ Pizza Hut is losing out on one key demographic

Pizza Hut is missing out on a key demographic, according to GlobalData Retail: students, who are instead buying from the competition.

Parent company Yum Brands Inc. YUM, -1.24%reported same-store sales increases at Taco Bell (up 5%) and KFC (up 3%) for the third quarter. But Pizza Hut had a 1% same-store sales decline.

GlobalData Retail’s Neil Saunders says the brand “plays third fiddle” with younger customers, especially students, who are instead choosing Domino’s Pizza Inc. DPZ, -0.28% and “troubled” Papa John’s International Inc. PZZA, +0.33%

“This is one of the reasons why the chain has focused so much on digital initiatives, in an attempt to better connect with this cohort, which is still driving much of the market growth,” Saunders wrote.
