Outside the Box: Forget the ‘blue wave’: These Republicans hold the keys to democracy after the 2018 midterm elections

Much of the discussion about the 2018 midterm elections focuses on whether or not the results were evidence of a “wave” election. There are arguments to be made on both sides of this divide, but this is not the real question.

Commentators who see a blue wave point to results in the House of Representatives where, political analyst Harry Enten notes, Democrats secured a majority “with ease”, likely picking up somewhere north of 30 seats.

Those who do not see a blue wave can point out that Republicans added multiple seats to their majority in the Senate, and overall Democratic gains in the House were smaller than gains Republicans made in the 2010 or 2014 elections (though we may not know the precise size of the new Democratic majority for several days as results continue to be tabulated).
