Black Friday chaos appears on the decline as online shopping gains

More Thanksgiving and Black Friday shoppers are staying home to make purchases online rather than busting down the doors at stores the way they used to, retail traffic checks by KeyBanc Capital Markets show.

Promotional discounts are plentiful, with the latest Numerator data showing that discounts in many major shopping categories, including computers, outerwear for the family, and entertainment are higher on Black Friday 2018 than they were in 2017.

However, many discounts are available online, eliminating the need to brave cold temperatures and crowds.

“Initial store traffic was in line with our expectations; it seems softer year-over-year owing to a continued shift online,” KeyBanc analysts led by Ed Yruma wrote in a Friday note.
