Tens of thousands of people have lost their homes in the California wildfires. As of last count the deadliest fire, in northern California, has killed at least 88 people, and more than 200 are still missing. The almost complete destruction of the town of Paradise, California has left thousands homeless. The fires have also taken a terrible toll on many of the state’s animals as well.

The public has responded with outpourings of support. But before you give, experts on nonprofits and charitable giving have some advice to make sure your money reaches its destination.
