What does it mean to be a poor student on a rich college campus?

All eyes are on the role elite colleges play in our society this week after news broke that the Department of Justice was arresting about 50 people for their role in a scheme using bribes to guarantee wealthy students a spot at these schools.

Anthony Jack, a professor at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, brings a perspective to the cultural life surrounding these elite schools most people are unlikely to see in discussions of famous actresses and their influencer children and — crucially — what it’s like to be poor in a space designed for wealthy people.

Some low-income students at the school Jack studied found themselves working on ‘Community Detail,’ a program that pays students to essentially work as janitors, cleaning other students’ bathrooms.
