Market Snapshot: Stocks gain on energy shares but key indexes trade off highs

U.S. stocks rose Tuesday as energy and consumer staples sectors buoyed the market but main indexes traded off their intraday highs on tepid housing and consumer-confidence data as well as lingering uncertainties over global growth and Brexit.

How are benchmarks performing?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.36% rose 68 points, or 0.3%, to 25,585 after being up more than 200 points. The S&P 500 index SPX, +0.49% advanced 10 points, or 0.4%, to 2,809, with energy and consumer staples sectors leading. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.47% climbed 28 points, or 0.4%, to 7,666.
