Economic Preview: A big increase in hiring in March would help soothe all the heartburn over the economy

A rebound in job creation in March would help dispel lingering worries about the U.S. economy.

There’s no getting around it: The U.S. economy got off to a lousy start in 2019. Now it’s time to find out if growth is starting to perk up.

A handful of key reports on jobs, retail sales, manufacturing and business investment will shed light on whether pitiful economic growth early in the year will yield to yet another spring revival.

The spotlight as usual will fall most heavily on the March employment at the end of the week. The U.S. created a measly 20,000 new jobs in February — the smallest gain in 17 months — and Wall Street is looking for a rebound.
