Capitol Report: Senate Democrats push bill that would get the IRS directly into offering free online tax filing

As many Americans scramble to file their taxes by Monday’s deadline, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and other Democratic lawmakers are backing a bill that they say would make the process easier.

Their Tax Filing Simplification Act includes a directive to the Internal Revenue Service to develop a free online tax preparation and filing service. That’s after a different bill attracted criticism last week for a provision that would ban the IRS from providing a free electronic filing system, though its backers said it doesn’t do that.

Warren’s measure, whose co-sponsors include several of her rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination, also would allow some Americans with simple tax situations to use a “return-free option,” meaning a pre-prepared return with a refund amount or amount due already calculated.
