TaxWatch: This is exactly how much smaller Americans’ tax refunds are this year

Slightly more people received a tax refund this year — but the typical size of that sum was below last year’s average, according to the first Internal Revenue Service filing figures since tax season’s close.

The average refund this year was $2,725, which is $55 less than the $2,780 check that overpaying taxpayers received last year, the IRS said.

About 300,000 more people received refunds this year the IRS said, comparing numbers as of April 19 with numbers as of April 20, 2018. So far this year 95.7 million American have gotten refunds.

All in all, the feds paid out $4.4 billion less in the first tax season since the 2017 tax code overhaul took effect.
