Strong banks and weak miners tug Europe markets in opposite directions

European markets were mixed but mostly lower as investors in the eurozone returned from holiday to a basket of earnings.

How did markets perform?

The U.K.’s FTSE 100 UKX, -0.06% was nearly flat Thursday, up 0.1% to 7,388.6 after falling 0.4% in Wednesday’s session.

The pound GBPUSD, +0.0383% rose 0.1% to $1.3062, building on Wednesday’s gain of 0.4%.

Other European markets reopened after the holiday Wednesday with modest losses. The Stoxx SXXP, -0.21% as down 0.2% to 390.2.

Germany’s DAX DAX, +0.35%DAX, -0.46% was the exception, rising 0.2% to 12,365.6.

Italy’s FTSE MIB I945, -0.26% dropped 0.2% to 21,828.3
