Brexit Brief: Conservatives and Labour both lose ground in U.K. local elections

The Conservative Party and Labour Party have been hit by a Brexit backlash in local elections held across the U.K. on Thursday, the first indication of the political costs of parliament’s deadlock over the country leaving the European Union.

The Conservatives have lost around 440 seats so far, as the results from yesterday’s local election in England and Northern Ireland begin to come in, with some predicting that this could rise to at least 800 by the end of the day, the BBC reported.

Brandon Lewis, Conservative Party chair, said voters had given his party a very clear message they were “fed up” with the Brexit impasse and that “they want us to get it done”.
