Market Snapshot: Stocks close lower as trade-related uncertainty overshadows strong data

U.S. stocks bounced back from deep losses Friday, leaving major indexes to shift between gains and losses, as strong economic data helped to offset trade-related jitters after Chinese state media indicated little appetite by Beijing to resume negotiations following Trump administration’s move to raise tariffs on Chinese imports.

How are the major benchmarks performing?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.20% reversed direction to rise 16 points to 25,878 and the S&P 500 index SPX, -0.37% lost 3 points to 2,872. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -0.70% declined 31 points, or 0.4% to 7,866.
