Facebook decided to rethink policies on fake videos two days before Pelosi video

Just two days before a doctored video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi generated millions of views on social media, Facebook Inc. announced internally it would explore the need for a new policy on manipulated media.

At the company’s internal policy meeting on May 21, Facebook FB, -3.03% staffers told roughly 60 executives and employees in attendance that the company had convened a working group to evaluate whether or not it needed an additional, more specific policy that tackled manipulated media. MarketWatch attended the meeting to observe an earlier discussion about rules surrounding cannabis sales on its platform, with an agreement to not quote Facebook staff directly and only paraphrase themes and ideas from the policy meeting.
