Can anything be done to prevent gun violence at work?

A longtime Virginia Beach municipal government employee opened fire at work Friday after submitting his resignation that morning, according to reports, killing 11 city employees and one contractor.

The gunman, who died after a shootout with police, had demonstrated “satisfactory” performance and “was in good standing within his department,” city manager Dave Hansen said. “There was absolutely no warning whatsoever,” public utilities account clerk Christi Dewar, who worked near the gunman, told the Washington Post.

The mass shooting marked the latest high-profile instance of workplace gun violence in America: In February, a recently fired worker killed five people at an Aurora, Ill.
