The Wall Street Journal: New York bill would grant undocumented immigrants driver’s licenses

The Democratic-controlled New York Senate will vote next week on a bill that would give undocumented immigrants in the state the ability to apply for a driver’s license.

Referred to as the Green Light bill, it passed the Democratic-led state Assembly Wednesday in a 87-61 vote, largely along party lines. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, is pushing for passage of the bill before the legislative session ends.

The bill’s supporters say it is a matter of fairness and safety, because people already driving illegally will get insurance and training. One of the bill’s co-sponsors, state Sen. Luis Sepulveda, a Democrat, said it has built-in precautions because the licenses would be clearly marked as drive-only.
