Women are taking on more leading roles in entertainment, but men are still the stars

Female filmmakers are seeing more representation in Hollywood’s less mainstream corners.

Women are writing, directing and producing more independent films than ever, but they’re still getting less work than their male counterparts.

Women are making strides as directors (they directed 33% of independent films between 2018 and 2019, up from 29%); writers (32%, up from 26%); producers (37% up from 36%); executive producers (32% up from 26%); and editors (29% up from 27%), according to the latest study by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University.

The survey looked at over 10,700 credits on more than 970 independent films in 2018 to 2019, and over 80,000 credits on more than 8,000 films over 2008 to 2019.
