Brexit Brief: PM front-runner Johnson on back foot over Bannon links and domestic fracas

Boris Johnson, the favorite to be the U.K.’s next prime minister, found himself on the defensive over the weekend following a domestic altercation at his London flat.

Police were called to Johnson’s flat late on the night of June 21, the Guardian reported at the weekend, following a heated altercation between Johnson and his girlfriend, Carrie Symonds. This comes after the former London mayor topped a ballot of his fellow Conservative MPs on Thursday 20, leaving him the overwhelming favorite to succeed outgoing PM Theresa May.

After the news of the heated argument ran on most U.K. newspapers’ front pages over the weekend, the Mail on Sunday newspaper published the results of a snap poll showing rival Jeremy Hunt’s chances for PM had been boosted, with Johnson’s popularity taking a hit, both among Conservative members—whose votes will decide the contest over the next month—and the general public.
