Market Extra: The Dow seen snapping its longest period without a record in about 4 years

A period of underperformance for the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.53% was poised to end on Wednesday, in a thinly trade holiday-shortened session.

The Dow was trading higher, on track to notch its first record since Oct. 3, 2018, marking 188 sessions between that record and today’s if levels hold. That would represent the longest fallow period for the blue-chip index since it went 290 sessions without hitting an all-time high between May 19, 2015 and July 12, 2016, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

The Dow needs to trade above 26,828,29 to carve out a closing record and was most recently trading up 136 points, or 0.5%, at 26,923.02, not far from its intraday high at 26,951.81, according to FactSet data.
