House Democrats on Thursday passed a bill to double the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025, highlighting a yawning gap between the two parties ahead of what’s shaping up to be one of the most bitterly contested presidential elections in history.

The federal minimum wage has remained at $7.25 since July 2009. The 10-year interval since the last time it was increased is the longest ever.

The so-called “raise the wage” measure was approved in a 231-199 vote largely along party lines, but it has effectively no chance of passage in the Republican-controlled Senate.
